Making friends with other species is another way to get the DNA points.
Each one of them has different levels of advancement.

It’s hardest to make friends with tougher and hating you individuals.
However - it’s worth trying - you get more DNA points in case you make them your friends.
you’re able to use your teammates too - the bigger is your party, the better.
In extactly same way it’s possible for you to add new companions to your pack.
