By distributing the attributes you’re able to e.g.
create a strong and durable character at the cost of little agility and no skills in diplomacy.
High-level attributes unlock unique dialogue options and create interesting scenarios.
For example, at some point, you are bound to encounter a closed door.
A strong character will easily force the door.
However, a character with high perception ratio will detect the well-hidden opening mechanisms, etc.

It is worth mentioning that multiple items, abilities, etc.
This is a clear indication that a certain class could use e.g.
intellect much more that perception.
